Free meditation classes in Boston

About the Boston Sri Chinmoy Meditation Group

We have been offering free meditation classes in Boston and Cambridge since 1975. We have also sponsored running races in keeping with Sri Chinmoy’s appreciation for sports. Over the years, our members have typically included health care professionals, office workers, computer programmers, administrators and owners of restaurants and retail shops.

Meditation Boston - Free Class Schedule

We offer free meditation classes at various locations around Boston, most often in Cambridge and Arlington. Class-givers in the Boston area have been practicing meditation and teaching workshops for the last 30 years.

The classes offer practical guidance and inspiration for making meditation a daily habit. They are designed for beginners as well as those looking to brush up on incorporating meditation more deeply into their daily life. We give classes every October and March but also seasonally – so please inquire about our schedule year-round.

We welcome people from all walks of life and at all stages of meditation and hope to provide meditation techniques of lasting benefit to all. To learn more about our meditation classes or the Boston Sri Chinmoy Meditation Group, kindly call us at  617-299-0970 or send a message on our contact form.

Meditation instructors from the Sri Chinmoy Centre

Begabati Lennihan, RN, CCH (Certified Classical Homeopath) has been meditating under the guidance of Sri Chinmoy since 1973, when she first met him as a senior at Harvard. Begabati grew up planning to become a doctor like her father, but she developed a pioneering interest in natural healing in the early 70s and upon graduation opened a health food store instead. For many years she ran her health food store, first in Boston and then in Cambridge, as a much-loved community gathering place and a venue for her meditation classes.

More recently she has opened a practice as a homeopath and natural health consultant (GreenHealing). She offers free meditation classes for the Harvard community through Harvard’s Center for Wellness (listed as “Calm Your Mind, Open Your Heart” on the HCW calendar). Inspired by Sri Chinmoy’s promotion of marathon running as a metaphor for the spiritual journey, she has completed 50 marathons, ultramarathons and triathlons.

Ganapati ColemanGanapati J. Coleman, Ph.D. became a student of Sri Chinmoy in 1974 and joined the Boston Sri Chinmoy Centre while studying Electrical Engineering at Harvard in the mid-70s, later earning MA and PhD at Brown University in biomedical engineering and electrical engineering respectively.

Born in Africa (Monrovia, Liberia), Ganapati has maintained an ongoing interest in Centre projects there since the running of the first World Harmony Run (then the Peace Run) in 1987 and offers ongoing meditation classes in the Boston area.

Sri Chinmoy in Boston

Sri Chinmoy offered many lectures, concerts and public meditations in Boston, including a public meditation (in 1978) and later an organ concert (in 1988) at Trinity Church. He also offered lectures at colleges in Amherst and on Cape Cod.

Most of his Boston-area appearances were at Harvard, however, most notably a series of seven lectures at Harvard Divinity School in the spring of 1975 published as Earth-Bound Journey, Heaven-Bound Journey.

Other projects by our members

As part of our community service, we help to create gift bags for homeless children distributed by Mother Teresa’s Sisters of Charity. One of our members, Ganapati Coleman, is instrumental in bringing free meditation classes and the World Harmony Run to several countries in Africa.
Sri Chinmoy’s students often run cafes and other businesses where members of the public have a chance to take free meditation classes, browse Sri Chinmoy’s books and hear his music, and generally soak up the peaceful atmosphere.  Our vegetarian restaurant, The Oneness-Fountain-Heart, which originated in Somerville’s Teele Square, is now located in Queens, New York.
